Cellulose
What is cellulose? Cellulose is an organic compound and is the main substance of the walls of plant cells.
How is cellulose digested? It is used as fiber to create bulk for bowel movements and helps move waste out of the body
Is cellulose safe to consume? Because cellulose is an organic compound, it is deemed safe to consume by the FDA. Additionally, the extremely small amount of cellulose naturally present in foods/products is not considered dangerous to humans.
Where does cellulose come from in Megafood Product? The cellulose used in supplement and pharmaceutical manufacturing is typically sourced from wood pulp and/or cotton. When sourced from wood pulp it is often a by-product of existing industries, such as lumber.
Maltodextrin
What is maltodextrin? Maltodextrin is a polysaccharide produced by vegetable starch that is then processed into an easily digestible powder.
Is maltodextrin the same as msg? No, Maltodextrin and MSG are not the same thing. It is however broken down similarly in the body as they are both easily digested.
How is maltodextrin digested? Maltodextrin is digested as a carbohydrate in the form of glucose. This means that it is very easily digested and can be used as a form of energy.
Is maltodextrin safe to consume? Absolutely. The FDA approves maltodextrin as a safe food additive, and is included in the total carbohydrate count on food labels.
Where does Megafood’s maltodextrin come from? Because maltodextrin is originally sourced from vegetable starches, we here at Megafood source ours from corn, tapioca, and cassava.
Stearic Acid
What is Stearic acid? Stearic acid is a fatty acid that can be found in a variety of foods including chocolate.
Where does Megafood source Stearic Acid from? Megafood uses stearic acid sourced from RSPO certified palm oil.
Why do Megafood products need Stearic Acid? Our products contain Stearic Acid to aid in lubrication of ingredients in the tableting and formation process. This is similar to the use of oil on a sheet pan to prevent sticking when baking.
Palm oil
What is palm oil? Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil that is sourced from fruit of the oil palm tree.
How is palm oil digested? Similar to other fats, palm oil is digested in the small intestine by bile acids that emulsify the fat into triglycerides. Lipases then further breakdown the triglycerides and release fatty acids from a glycerol molecule.
What is RSPO certified and is this something Megafood uses? RSPO means Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil. Because palm oil is sourced directly from the palm tree it can be harmful to the environment to harvest it. RSPO certified palm oil ensures that the sourcing of palm oil is done sustainably in order to preserve the environment. Megafood only uses RSPO certified palm oil in our products.
Hypromellose
What is hypromellose? Hypromellose is an elastic polymer often used in the controlled delivery of oral supplements and medication.
Is Hypromellose different from cellulose? Hypromellose is a derivative of cellulose. They are very similar in composition, but hypromellose provides a more elastic property that allows for capsules to be created without any animal materials.
Why does Megafood use hypromellose? Megafood uses hypromellose for containing our product within a capsule or tablet as a protective soluble coating.
