Niacin Report in Nature Medicine - February 2024Updated 2 months ago
Q: Given the recent study published in Nature Medicine, do you plan to reformulate your products that contain niacin?
We appreciate your concerns with respect to Nature Medicine's recent publication. Our Nutrition Science team has evaluated the data and noted that the study's focus was on scanning thousands of circulating metabolites and developing correlations with an outcome of interest. In this case the study noted that the niacin metabolites called 2PY and 4PY were associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events in cardiac patients. The study was not conducted on a healthy population on a typical diet. Although, it is the current medical practice to treat cardiac patients with high doses of Vitamin B3, it is also important to note that this study did not address the diet, nor supplementation, nor Vitamin B3 (Niacin) intake of any kind.
Nature Medicine is a very high level and well-respected journal and does cutting edge exploratory analyses. This level of research is paramount to our eventual understanding of the human body. However, this groundbreaking research, while it is exciting for news outlets, should not be cause for alarm. As it is true in many areas of biological research, metabolic pathways are important to figure out, but they are extremely complicated and tangled with other pathways, and at this stage, it would be premature to draw any meaningful conclusions without further human clinical data that connects vitamin B3 supplementation with any adverse effect.
That being said, we always take consumer safety into consideration as we consider the vitamin and mineral potency of MegaFood products. Your concerns have been noted as we reevaluate this formula.
