Maltodextrin FAQ
What is maltodextrin? Maltodextrin is a polysaccharide produced by vegetable starch that is then processed into an easily digestible powder.
Why is maltodextrin included in some of your formulas? You will find maltodextrin as an ingredient in many supplements that contain herbal extracts. To standardize and concentrate the beneficial compounds found in plants, an extraction process often takes place. This can be done via water, CO2, or alcohol, and renders a concentrated and more potent herbal ingredient which is often much preferred by consumers. This liquid extract then needs to be converted into a powder to add to tablets or capsules. As a part of the spray drying process, maltodextrin is used to transform these liquids into powders, especially when the materials are very sticky.
How is maltodextrin digested? Maltodextrin is digested as a carbohydrate in the form of glucose. This means that it is very easily digested and can be used as a form of energy.
Is maltodextrin safe to consume? Absolutely. The FDA approves maltodextrin as a safe food additive, and is included in the total carbohydrate count on food labels.
Where does Megafood’s maltodextrin come from? Because maltodextrin is originally sourced from vegetable starches, we source ours from corn or tapioca (cassava).
Is maltodextrin safe to take if I am diabetic/watching my sugar intake? While we do not believe the small amounts present in our tablets or capsules will have a significant impact on blood sugar, it is always best to consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner to determine if a product is right for you.
How much maltodextrin is in the Immune SuperFood Mushroom sku? Maltodextrin makes up only 2.5% of the formulation, which translates to 15.75mg per capsule, and 30.5 mg per serving.
